Title of Book:
haunted

Author: JUDITH ST.GEOGRE

Summary of the book:

A pretty lame and predictable mystery about a teenage boy that house sits a big mansion of a murdered couple. When sixteen-year-old Alex accepts a summer job as caretaker of an old mansion, he thinks it'll be a breeze--he plans to lay by the pool, drive around in a nice car, and meet girls. But the moment he sees the sinister-looking house he remembers why he's there: a murder suicide has left it empty and it's his job to look after things until the new owner arrives. Alone on the sprawling property, Alex becomes the victim of strange, unexplainable events and he soon realizes something is horribly wrong. He knows he is being sucked into an uncontrollable situation--a terrifying battle between two ghosts--and there seems to be no way out.

I am recemmeding this book because:

It is suspenseful and intriguing. The house wants Alex to solve the mystery of the murdered couple’s death. I thought Alex had quite an active imagination, and overreacted on occasion. However, being in an isolated house where murders had taken place is enough to freak anyone out, regardless of age. Also, there was a lot of weird stuff going on in the house. For instance, there was a scarf floating in the air. This book is very suitable for someone who likes reading unrealistic and suspenseful books.

My favorite part of the book :

My favorite part of the book is one of the paranormal parts of the book. Alex sank into the pool but no one was in there. He knew someone pushed him as he saw someone was in the downstairs window looking out at him. Although Alex suffered strange, he still tried to solve the mystery. Alex was really brave. The sense was super creepy and made me have a nightmare.

Book Recommendation
Title of Book:
Grammar AND Vocabulary FOR Advanced

Author: Martin Hewings, Simon Haines
ISBN : 9781107481114

Recommender:
5A LAI OLIVIA

Summary of the book:

The book is separated into 2 sections, one is about grammar usage and the other one is about vocabularies for different conditions. In the grammar section, detailed explanations of specific grammar points and practices are provided to remind students what grammar items they may already know. In the vocabularies section, every unit is based on a general topic, such as migrations and the environment. This section includes an immense amount of collocations and idioms, and introduces efficient and effective ways of studying vocabularies which will help students pass the exam. Not only does the book encompass exam practice that caters for the four papers in HKDSE, but also includes Answer Key for students to check whether their answers are correct or not and to pay extra attention to the common mistakes they usually made in the examination. Materials for use with this book can be found online, like wordlists and audio recordings. This feature of the book provides a great alternative for students who prefer reading E-books.

I am recemmeding this book because:

·  The book contains less words but more unique or memorable illustrations that students wouldn’t be fed up with its content and even provide a funny and motivating way for them to learn English.

·  This book is exam-oriented in which its content has covered the reading, writing, listening and speaking papers in HKDSE. It contains error warnings to help students avoid common mistakes made by real exam candidates.

·   Many students have found difficulties in finding the best way for their studies and find no one to turn to. In this book, students can develop techniques for effective learning and remembering vocabularies. This in turn helps students to be well-prepared for the DSE examination.
My favorite part of the book :

The part that I found the most practical and functional in theis book is the Exam Practice Section.  In this part, I do improve my reading, writing and listening skills through doing a plenty of exercises.  The themes that are chosen in the exercise are closely related to the hot issues of Hong Kong and the globe, and they will probably appear in DSE examination.  Through the practices, not only can I improve my skills in the four domains, but also it helps me to think in different perpectives on an issue.  I firmly believe that the Exam Practice Section can really improve my critical-thinking skills but not just about skills that related to examination.

5A Yeung Pui Wan

Summary of the book:

This book consists of 10 units concerning different topic ranging from Animals, Customs and tradition to Economics as well as The Brain. It mainly focuses on the listening and speaking skills that we are going to be tested in the HKDSE examination. There is learning objectives of each chapter which students can know what they are going to learn as well as the main point to focus on. Not only do students have to beware of listening and speaking practices provided, they do have to pay extra attention to the part called ‘Language Development’. Language Development can help student to clarify the usage of several grammar rules and identify typical learner mistakes so as to help students to avoid making mistakes. Thought-provoking videos from Discovery Education are included in every unit which can arouse students’ interest in the topic. UNLOCK students’ book is available as interactive eBooks. With answers and Discovery Education videos embedded, the book provides a great alternative to the printed materials.

I am recemmeding this book because:

  • Students always lose their interest on English Book as it is too thick with a wide range of difficult words that they have not seen before. This greatly discourages them to read English book, whereas their language cannot be boosted. UNLOCK consists of several exciting videos from Discovery Education which can provide new angles on a range of academic topics.
  • In the way of learning English, students may feel depressed and boring. UNLOCK can provide a funny and interesting way for students to learn English in order to achieve academic excellence.
  • Numerous exercises concerning listening and speaking skills are provided, this can unlock students’ potential and help them to do a well preparation for HKDSE examination.
My favorite part of the book :

The part that really impressed me is ‘Critical Thinking’. The critical thinking sections are based on Benjamin Bloom’s classification of learning objectives. This ensures learners develop their higher-order thinking skills, ranging from demonstrating knowledge and understanding to in-depth evaluation. There are different learning styles from pictures, tables to mind maps. Not only can students develop their good writing and speaking habits, learners can engage in evaluative and analytical tasks that are designed by the book. Students can work in groups to discuss the speaking task in order to brainstorm some excellent points. This learning process is useful as well as crucial , students can learn from one another and share their own opinions with their classmates.

The Kite Runner

Author: Khaled Hosseini

6A Poon Sin To

Summary of the book:

This book is about the significance of making amendments for our mistakes. Amir and his servant Hassan have been best friends ever since they were little. Hassan always stands up or even becomes the scapegoat for his master Amir whenever Amir gets into troubles.

Being a weak boy who likes poetry instead of bloodthirsty sports, Amir’s father is not at all affectionate with him. In a bid to earn his father’s love, he craves winning in the kite-fighting tournament so as to be the apple of his father’s eye.

During the fierce competition, he witnesses his friend being raped by a hooligan and has no guts to stand up for his poor friend. Afterward, war comes to Afghanistan and Amir flies to California with his dad to start a new life, putting an end to his friendship with his servant.

Living in fear and guilt for several years, Amir receives a letter from his motherland one day, asking him to come back and to atone for his actions in the past by saving the life of his friend’s son.

I am recemmeding this book because:

I would like to recommend this book because there are countless things that are worth to learn from. Students can be inspired to be warriors who will stand up against unfairness and injustice instead of being cowards. They can also learn some useful vocabularies and expressions which help improve their English standards.

My favorite part of the book :
My favorite part of the book is when Amir asks his father about ‘sin’, his father replies ‘Theft is the only sin. Every other sin is a variation of theft. When you kill a man, you steal a life. When you tell a lie, you steal someone’s right to the truth. When you cheat, you steal the right to fairness.’ It reminds me the importance of being honest, humble and kind-hearted.
